As a Teenager I Struggled to Keep Up

At that time my digestion was sluggish, my nose permanently blocked and I often felt heavy, bloated and awkward. Academically I was doing just fine, but mentally I felt slow and in conversation with my friends I often felt it was impossible to keep up.

I wanted life to feel easier.

But I was getting more and more worried about how I would cope with the demands of adulthood if being a teenager felt so difficult.

Loss of Energy

Actually, at the time it felt like a constant effort to keep up with my peers. I remember one really bad day: I was sitting in the school hall after eating lunch, surrounded by lively friends about to go and chase around outside in the fresh air, but all I wanted to do was sit on my own and wait for this hot and sticky congested feeling in my body to pass.

I wondered if it ever would go away, and what had happened to the limitless energy of my childhood.

I looked around and saw sprightly people moving with more agility than me, their faces looked brighter and they seemed able to express themselves more clearly than me.

I Didn't Understand the Problem

I felt ashamed of myself… and I wanted to be like them. As you can imagine, I was desperate, but I wasn’t ready to give up on the aspiration that I still hold with me today: a deep sense, or knowing, that I can stay energised without relying on drugs or stimulants.

The problem I had back then was I didn’t understand the whole range of ingredients needed to live at ease with myself in a natural state of health. I didn’t know what simple habits were required to live healthily or how to manage my own energy levels! And that’s when I knew I HAD to make a change. Luckily, I had curiosity on my side, which helped guide my health in a positive direction for the rest of my life; and I tuned in to that deep belief I held that it was possible for me to feel really well and vibrant more of the time. I convinced myself that it was just a matter of figuring out how to feel this way ‘naturally’.

My Quest Had Begun

Although, for a while, I still spent most of the time pretending that everything was just fine, that attitude didn’t work for me at all. Like many teenagers, and even adults, I tried changing the way I dressed and spoke, but that was only putting a mask over the real issue.

I can remember reading a short story in my uncle’s Reader’s Digest magazine about the ‘runner’s high’. The author spelt out how running gave him a buzz that felt way better than that he got from drinking coffee or beer, and when the post-run high wore off, his day-to-day energy levels and clarity of mind were far greater than when his lifestyle was more ‘couch potato’.

After reading that story I knew I had to get this free high for myself. I followed the plan he’d set out in the article for several weeks. Then sure enough, one summer evening I was running through nearby woods and suddenly, my senses seemed to heighten. It was like someone had turned up a dial inside me. The music playing from my Walkman sounded more cheerful than usual, the smell of damp wood in the air was fresher than I had ever noticed, and twilight was giving the leaves a super-luminous glow. I knew I was running but it didn’t feel like I was putting any effort into creating the strides.

Health is an Ongoing Journey

Of course, the high didn’t last forever and it didn’t mean that my health problems would be fixed for the rest of my life, but it gave me back the self-confidence to make myself feel good, at no financial cost and on my own terms.  And I finally started viewing health as an ongoing quest or journey. And guess what? It’s still working!

It was this inner knowing that things could be better that caused my ears to prick up every time I read or heard something about people who had turned their own life around. That sort of information seemed to shout out at me, giving me little bursts of hope.

Over the years I’ve also learned that the health challenges I faced weren’t my fault! I had been failing because of the outdated idea that real, long-term wellbeing can be sorted with one or two quick fixes. No wonder I was struggling.

Magic Bullets Aren’t the Answer

There is so much conflicting and confusing information about what we must do to stay healthy. There are countless plans and protocols about diet, exercise, mental health or personal development, not to mention the latest products from companies that want me to believe that taking their expensive supplement or joining their new 12-week programme will fix everything.

When I figured that magic bullets aren’t the answer, I was finally able to OWN my own health.

The real problem is this old idea promoted by so many people that nutrition and exercise alone will give us long-term wellbeing and we can ignore everything else. That flawed idea was keeping me from discovering how to return to a natural state of easy health!

The Ingredients of Health​

For long-lasting health we must find balance between many lifestyle factors

Once I realised that being highly healthy relies on a balance of several ingredients mixed together in the right recipe, life started tasting really good for me. This includes getting plenty of rest, enjoying good relationships, managing stress, challenging limiting beliefs and building emotional resilience – as well as the obvious need to eat well and stay active.

All of these things are equally important and that’s when I started to understand how to find a natural state of easy health really FAST!

I used what I discovered to achieve some incredible things for myself (and in the longer term, for my clients), such as:

  • I put my own chronic digestion and sinus issues into long-term remission
  • I avoided the need for surgery to knee cartilage damage through rehabilitation and therapy it’s still working just fine 10 years after the injury
  • I learned to change deep-seated limiting beliefs that held me back in social situations and relationships
  • I discovered how to manage a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) whilst still maintaining high levels of physical activity

At the same time, I’ve built a career on improving the health of people and the planet.
